The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in June, 1939.  The purpose of its creation was to:  1)  promote safety and to effect rescues on and over the high seas and on navigable waters;  2)  to promote efficiency in the operation of vessels;  3)  to foster a wider knowledge and better compliance with the laws, rules and regulations covering the operation of vessels; and, 4) to facilitate other operations of the United States Coast Guard.

In 1996, Congress expanded the purposes of the Auxiliary to include assisting the Coast Guard as authorized by the Commandant in performing any Coast Guard function, power, duty, role, mission or operation authorized by law.  Although the Auxiliary is all volunteer, and non-military, it assists the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement efforts such as public education, safety patrols, inspection of vessels, search and rescue, and marine environmental protection.

Auxiliarists save lives and property, assist boaters who are in distress, provide free safety inspections of vessels and teach Boating Safety and Seamanship as well as other classes which are designed to ensure safe recreational boating.  If you want to make a difference and to assist your community in this worthwhile goal, join us in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
